Today Saudi Arabia has oil-rich modern cities, and is home to the two most holy sites in Islam, Mecca and Medina. The climate is harsh, dry desert with great extremes of temperature and the terrain is mostly uninhabited, sandy desert. Saudi Arabia is considered to be one of the fifteen states that comprise the so-called "Cradle of Humanity."
